Senate approves members to key House committees

The Senate Chambers during the pre-swearing sessions of the 4th Senate on September 7, 2022 [Elvis Ogina, Standard] UDA Secretary General and Nominated Senator Veronica Maina has been picked to serve in the Speaker's panel alongside Nominated Senator Catherine Mumma and senators Hillary Sigei (Bomet) and Abdul Haji (Garissa). The Senate approved their names to preside over the House in the absence of Speaker Amason Kingi and his deputy Kathuri Murungi. Senate Majority Leader Aron Cheruiyot moved the motion to have senators to serve in the County Public Accounts Committee, County Public Investment Committee and Special Funds Committee and the Committee on Delegated Legislation. "Pursuant to Standing Orders Nos.193, 194, 195, and 199 the Senate approves the following senators nominated by the Senate Business Committee to serve in Select Committees of the Senate as follows," said Cheruiyot. County Public Accounts Committee will have Senators Samson Cherargey (Nandi), John Methu (Nyandarua), Mariam Omar (Nominated), Julius Mwenda (Tharaka Nithi), Moses Kajwang (Homa Bay), Fatuma Dullo (Isiolo), Richard Onyonka (Kisii), Edwin Sifuna (Nairobi) and Omtatah Okoiti (Busia) as members. The senators to sit in the County Public Investments and Special Funds Committee are Kipchumba Murkomen (Elgeyo Marakwet), Karungo Thangwa (Kiambu), Maureen Mutinda (Nominated), Miraj Abdulrahman (Nominated), Eddy Oketch (Migori), Ledama Kina (Narok), Hamida Kibwana (Nominated), Tom Ojienda (Kisumu) and Godfrey Osotsi (Vihiga). The Committee on Delegated Legislation will have senators Julius Mwenda (Tharaka Nithi), Danson Mungatana (Tana River), Gloria Orwoba (Nominated), Joyce Korir (Nominated), Julius Murgor (West Pokot), Dan Maanzo (Makueni), Mohamed Faki (Mombasa), Betty Montet (Nominated) and Stewart Madzayo (Kilifi). "Pursuant to Standing Orders 199 and 228, and the Fourth Schedule to the Standing Orders, the Senate approves the following Senators nominated by the Senate Business Committee to serve in Standing Committees of the Senate as follows," said Cheruiyot. Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries Committee will have Senators; James Murango (Kirinyaga), Alexander Mundigi (Embu), Wamatinga Wahome(Nyeri), Allan Chesang (Trans Nzoia), Maureen Mutinda (Nominated), Moses Kajwang(Homabay), Dan Maanzo (Makueni), Enoch Wambua (Kitui) and Beth Syengo (Nominated) as members. Devolution and Intergovernmental Relations Committee has Senators; Sheikh Abass (Wajir), Soipan Tuya (Nominated), Peris Tobiko (Nominated) George Mbugua (Nominated), Mohamed Chute (Marsabit), Oburu Oginga (Siaya), Richard Onyonka (Kisii), Hezena Lemaletian (Nominated) and Catherine Mumma (Nominated) as members. In the Education Committee, senators Joseph Ngugi (Murang'a), Peris Tobiko (Nominated), Lenku Seki (Kajiado), James Murango (Kirinyaga), John Kinyua (Laikipia) Margaret Kamar (Nominated), Agnes Kavindu (Machakos), Joseph Kamau (Lamu) and Johnes Mwaruma (Taita Taveta) as members. Energy Committee will have senators Wamatinga Wahome (Nyeri), Veronica Nduati (Nominated), Danson Mungatana (Tana River), Sheikh Abass (Wajir), Boni Khalwale (Kakamega), Ledama Kina (Narok), Oburu Oginga (Siaya), James Lemenen (Turkana) and Edwin Sifuna (Nairobi) as members. Land, Environment and Natural Resources committee will have Senators; John Methu (Nyandarua), Steve Lelegwe (Samburu), William Cheptumo (Baringo),Wamatinga Wahome (Nyeri),Mariam Omar (Nominated) Issa Juma Boy(Kwale),Johnes Mwaruma (Taita Taveta),Agnes Kavindu (Machakos), and Beatrice Oyomo (Nominated) as members. National Cohesion, Equal Opportunities and Regional Integration Committee will have senators Mohamed Chute (Marsabit), Joyce Korir (Nominated), Julius Mwenda (Tharaka Nithi), Gloria Orwoba (Nominated), Raphael Chimera (Nominated) and Betty Montet (Nominated) as members. National Security, Defence and Foreign Relations Committee will have senators Julius Murgor (West Pokot), Lenku Seki (Kajiado), George Mbugua (Nominated), Fatuma Dullo(Isiolo), Joseph Kamau(Lamu), Tom Ojienda, (Kisumu) and Abdul Haji (Garissa) as members. Roads, Transport and Housing Committee will have senators Karungo Thangwa (Kiambu),Peris Tobiko (Nominated), John Kinyua (Laikipia), Mohamed Chute (Marsabit), Steve Lelegwe (Samburu), Enoch Wambua (Kitui), Moses Kajwang (Homa Bay), Stewart Madzayo (Kilifi) and Edwin Sifuna (Nairobi) as members. Trade, Industrialisation and Tourism Committee will have senators Lenku Seki (Kajiado), Kipchumba Murkomen (Elgeyo Marakwet), Jackson Mandago (Uasin Gishu), Tabitha Karanja (Nakuru), Karungo Thangwa (Kiambu), Crystal Asige (Nominated), Omtatah Okoiti (Busia), Betty Montet (Nominated) and Hezena Lemaletian (Nominated) as members. "Pursuant to the Parliamentary Powers and Privileges Act, and the Standing Order the Senate approves the following Senators nominated by the Senate Business Committee to serve in the Committee on Powers and Privileges, in addition to the Speaker of the Senate serving as the Chairperson of the Committee," said Cheruiyot. Senators Alexander Mundigi (Embu), Wamatinga Wahome (Nyeri), Soipan Tuiya (Nominated), Miraj Abdulrahman (Nominated), James Lomenen (Turkana) and Shakila Abdalla (Nominated) will serve in the Committee on Powers and Privileges. Senators Sheikh Abass (Wajir), Joseph Ngugi, (Murang'a) and Beth Syengo (Nominated) will serve in the Procedure and Rules Committee.
