ODM nominates cobbler to Siaya county assembly

"This news came as a surprise. I had reported to work in my workshop in Kolalo," said the father of three.

The cobbler, who earns between Sh100 and Sh200 per day, said he has always believed that the nomination slots are a preserve of some people.

"I've always thought that you can only be nominated if you have a godfather," said Odhiambo.

The cobbler who was nominated alongside 11 other people, will be sworn in on Tuesday and thereafter the MCAs will elect the assembly Speaker.

Odhiambo said this was the first time he was stepping into the assembly.

"I had never imagined setting foot into a house like this. I give gratitude to the ODM party for making this happen," he said, adding that it is still shocking for him to be referred to as "mheshimiwa."

The Nominated MCA has promised to be the voice of persons with disability.

Odhiambo attributed the nomination to his loyalty and love for the Orange party, saying he has been given an opportunity to be part of the solution to problems affecting persons with special needs.

"I am one of them and I understand all that they need," he said.

The cobbler, who dropped out in Standard Seven at Sirisia Primary School following the death of his father, said he will use Kiswahili in the assembly.

"I learned the trade of mending shoes from a friend after I was orphaned," he told The Standard.

He has been an ardent supporter of ODM party leader Raila Odinga and Siaya Governor James Orengo.

Sigomre MCA-Elect Andrew Omwende, who was also nominated to represent PWDs in the assembly lauded the decision by ODM party to nominate Odhiambo.

Mr Omwende, who boasts of constructing sheltered workshops for PWDs, promised to work with Odhiambo and push for construction of more facilities across the county.
