Quins boys thrashed

Homeboys RFC successfully defended their Chairman's Cup title with a 53-11 drubbing of Kenya Harlequin and went on to proclaim they are heading to the big league.

This is the second consecutive season that the side has successfully won all trophies on offer in the second division and they now believe it is time for them to join the top league and prove they are a force to reckon with.

Homeboys Head Coach Paul Murunga said they have won all there is too win and it now time to scale new heights: "We have won the Chairman’s cup, Mwamba Cup and Eric Shirley Shield for two consecutive seasons and I think it’s time for a new challenge," he told Feverpitch at the RFUEA grounds after his side’s demolition of the hosts Kenya Harlequin.

"We missed out on promotion last season to a technicality but we are now preparing for the Kenya Cup next season," he added. Despite winning the Eric Shirley Shield last season Homeboys RFC were not promoted as is written in the Kenya Rugby Union constitution because of a dubious reason that they were not yet affiliated to the Kenya Cup.

Having finished with the paper work and red tape procedures, Homeboys are now expected to join the eight clubs that participated in this year’s top league and Paul Murunga is bracing for a bruising battle. "We might experience a Herculean task in our first season, but after we settle I think we will be okay and will be one of the teams to watch out for in the league."

The Chairman’s Cup victory in the final came under controversial circumstances, mainly due to the players Homeboys opted to field.

Murunga made a bold decision to call Ken Moseti, Ian Indimuli and Hesbon Mataya into the side, with the three players already involved in the top division Bamburi Rugby Super Series which was on a break for the weekend.

Murunga who also played in the final defended his decision by saying; "this was an open tournament and Quins could also have played their main players if they wanted to, but they didn’t with the exception of Jotham Yahuma who had played for the Coastal Bulls."

The former KCB player reserved special praise for one of the controversial players, Mataya, who he says played very well at the wing and helped in the demolition of Quins who had put up quite a fight in the first half.

"Quins came hard at us in the first half and we were only leading 10-3 at the interval, but some of the play from the more experienced players helped us to ease into the game and it was all down hill from there," he added.
