State told to invest in rail to end jams

MPs have urged the Government to invest in modern rail transport to ease traffic congestion.

Yesterday, it also emerged Kenyans buy at least 40,000 cars a year. Members said without investment in rail, economic growth would be elusive.

The MPs called for the reinstatement of the famous ‘Michuki rules’ to restore order in the transport sector.

Transport Minister Amos Kimunya said the State had set aside Sh1.2 billion for the construction of railway lines. Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Transport and Matungu MP David Were called on the Kenya Revenue Authority to give incentives to people ready to invest in mass transport systems. Bumula MP Bifwoli Wakoli, Karachuonyo MP James Rege, Education Assistant Minister Calist Mwatela, Budalangi’s Ababu Namwamba and Kandara MP Maina Kamau called on the Government to invest in rail transport and trams.

Forestry Minister Noah Wekesa asked the Government to repair the dilapidated Eldoret-Kitale road.

The MPs spoke as they approved Sh11.6 billion budget for the Ministry of Transport yesterday.
