Sevens team off to Hong Kong

Kenya National Sevens rugby player Biko Adema is in high spirits as he leaves the country today to join the rest of the squad in Hong Kong.

The national rugby Sevens team is in Hong Kong for the sixth leg of the IRB Sevens Circuit and Adema joins the squad with the hope of creating impact, especially after the team’s dismal performance in Adelaide last Weekend.

Coach Benjamin Ayimba and his charges failed to garner a single point in Adelaide after losing to England in the Bowl Finals in an embarrassing 33-12 score line. The team has another chance to redeem themselves when they return to the pitch on Friday with the hope of winning the ultimate trophy.

The 24-team tournament has more points to be won than the normal 16-team one.

Should the local boys win the Hong Kong leg, they will walk away with 30 points, six more than if they would have got during the Adelaide leg last week.

Down cast

Adema admits he has been down cast about their drab performance he feels disturbed because they have not yet won a major trophy.

"This is a sport, sometimes you win and sometimes you lose. We lost in Adelaide but we will not sit by the corner and sulk over spilt milk because life must go on," said Adema.

"We have to look forward and that is the Hong Kong leg where we have to entrust in our abilities," he added.

Adema was speaking to FeverPitch after his club Nondies lost to Strathmore in the Kenya Cup where the former St Mary’s High School captain was still voted man of the match.

"I failed to travel with the rest of the squad to Adelaide because I was really tied up with CATS and piled up assignments in school, but now I have put in some time and I hope my inclusion in the side will create the much needed impact should I be fielded," he said.

Adema is a natural versatile centre player who can shift round the backline and give Ayimba the option to keep the opposition guessing. He will also help with the conversions should Lavin Asego be absent or have a bad kicking day.
