Newspaper vendor turns newsmaker

The team mandated with preparations for the farewell party for former President Kibaki did a commendable job. This is according to Kamichore Mutindira who reveals that the team toiled day and night assembling every piece of delicacy (we hope he tasted the food) befitting such an event.

But the person who captured Mutindira’s attention was none other than David Kuria, a newspaper vendor who has faithfully delivered dailies to President Uhuru Kenyatta for the past 25 years.

“He was overjoyed to have received a card specifically addressed to him to join other guests at State House for the fete. This was surely a great honour,” says Mutindira.

The vendor, he adds, expressed optimism that things would get better when the President settles in office. We hope he will not be forgotten.

Paradoxically, Mutindira claims that some news are doing the rounds to the effect that a widow who served all the three Kenyan presidents is living in poverty as she has not been given her severance pay.

“If this is true, one wonders who could be responsible for her woes,” he says.
