Githurai’s new, free dumpsite

Even after PointBlank reported in September about some shameless men who mistake the  Thika Superhighway bridge at Githurai 45 market for a urinal, this didn’t deter them from their  foul mission.

In fact, the story motivated them to also start dumping garbage in their ‘toilet’, according to Kahawa Wendani resident Fred Makana.

The story, however, had jolted Ruiru Municipal Council officials into action but their determination died out only after a few days, after discovering that they were fighting a losing war. Perhaps that’s why the mounting garbage (see picture on the left) doesn’t seem to bother the council, which still collects millions of shillings from the overcrowded market.

But market goers are worried because a mixture of urine and garbage is a recipe for diseases.

The failure by the council to take action against the polluters raises more questions than answers, says Makana.

“It is shameful that while the Chinese contractors have embarked on a beautification programme of the superhighway with grass and flowers, the council is not to be keen on supporting the initiative,” he says.
