Charles Mugane Njonjo, also known as the Duke of Kabeteshire, has never minced his words about the East African Community ever since he occupied the seat of the first African Attorney General in Jomo Kenyatta’s government. Mr Njonjo has never believed the community was a good idea. His point of departure is what he thinks Kenya’s interests are and whether they can be realised by Kenya going it alone or pursuing these interests within the context of the Community. What irks Mr Njonjo most is the idea of graduating from a free trade zone to a monetary union and then galloping into a political federation: that he believes is nothing but a disaster.
