County boss to rein in teachers over poor examination results

Garissa County: Garissa Governor Nathif Jama Adam said he will instigate disciplinary action against teachers whose schools continue to post poor exam results.

Mr Adam said his administration, with support from the national government, will not relent to take stiff measures such as transfers, demotions and even dismissals of teachers who fail to perform effectively in the county. He said his administration has the responsibility and mandate to take care of the interest of the public and will not tolerate ‘irresponsible’ teachers who continue to fail students.

The Governor, County Director of Education Adan Sheikh Abdullahi and Yusuf Noor Yunis of the Teachers Service Commission  said school administrators who stayed more than four years in a given school and continue to post poor results will face disciplinary action.

Garissa ranked last together with Mandera County with each getting a mean score of 183 marks. Out of the county’s 7,507 KCPE candidates who sat the exam, only 1,306 managed more than 250 marks.

Nathif further said he will not apologise to school heads over remarks that school administrators who stayed more than four years in one station and continue to post poor results will face dismissal.

Teachers on Saturday boycotted a meeting called by the Governor to address the dismal performance of schools in the county in the last year’s KCPE exams.

Nathif said school heads should instead apologise to parents  for not delivering and again for boycotting a crucial meeting to address the serious issue of poor results at national exams.

There was drama earlier after a section of primary school head teachers converged outside Garissa Hotel where the meeting was taking place and refused to participate in the meeting, accusing the Governor of disrespecting them.
