Youth launch National People's Council to offer alternative political leadership

[Benard Orwongo, Standard] Young activists have formed the National People's Council, which they said is rooted in the principles of social justice, rule of law and human rights. The council was formed by activists under Nairobi Chapter Social Justice Centre Working Group at Mathare Social Justice Centre in Nairobi County, on August 2, 2025. The working group comprises the Revolutionary Socialist League, Kongomano La Mapinduzi and the Communist Youth League. Speaking during the launch, NPC spokesperson Wanjira Wanjiru said the council will help push for political, economic and social justice. "We are gathered here today to chart a path forward to alternative political leadership rooted in the principles of social justice, rule of law and human rights," said Wanjira. She said the council is motivated by last year's protests against Finance Bill 2024 and the recent deaths during the anniversary on June 25. "The response of the State in total disregard of the rights of the citizens of Kenya as enshrined in our constitution, responded with violence, repression, abductions, threats and media censorship," said Wanjiru. She emphasized that the Gen Z and Saba Saba protests provided an ideal opportunity to address the fundamental issues facing the people of Kenya and NPC offers the momentum to defeat the current neo-colonial system and achieve complete independence in Kenya. "It is indeed a pivotal moment for a national revolution and the fulfillment of our generational mission. We, the sovereign people of Kenya, hereby establish the National People's Council, the symbol of the sovereignty and power of the people of Kenya, the organ of national representation and the platform of the collective will of the people of Kenya," she said. Davis Tafari, convener of Social Justice Movement Nairobi Chapter said youth have adopted a roadmap to the people's revolution in honour of all the martyrs, freedom fighters and the oppressed people in the path towards political and economic liberation. "We the young people of Kenya follow the footsteps of Mekatilili Wa Menza, Koitalel Arap Samoei, Pio Gama Pinto, Dedan Kimathi and all the freedom fighters in the pursuit of dignity, freedom and social justice," said Tafari. Wanjiru revealed that they will soon come up with a roadmap to achieve their intentions in the upcoming National Youth Convention slated for August 15 in Nairobi. The essence of this roadmap, she said, is to root for alternative political leadership from grassroots to the national level. "We have been having a politics of top-down approach. People come, sell us agendas that they lie to us, that end up being total lies, that people continue being in the same loop, waiting for another five years, for hope and for freedom.Now we are saying forward with the social justice movement," said Wanjiru. Lewis Mghanga from Revolutionary Socialist League said, NPC seeks to affirm that all sovereign power belongs to the people of Kenya. "We have seen that the organs of legislation as they exist today have served as mere instruments of the power of the executive. They have been captured by the political elite. By forming the NPC, we are reclaiming our sovereign power," he said. Mghanga added: "We are showing that indeed we have the people, power and that we can determine the destiny and the future and the direction of our country." Asked whether they will file a presidential candidate come 2027 General Elections, Wanjiru said the people's councils will determine that, after having discussions from the ground up and determine who it is they want to lead them moving forward. On the structure of NPC, she revealed that each ward shall establish a people's assembly and elect representatives to the ward people's council. "We shall elect representatives to the constituency People's Assembly, National People's Assembly and to the National People's Council, which is now the executive. This is our political roadmap to alternative political leadership," she said. Wanjiru rubbished inter-generational dialogue called by former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, saying such efforts in the past bore no fruit. "This is the young people having their own agenda. We have had dialogue and discussions and reports that continue accumulating dust with no one willing to implement them. Realising this, we therefore establish our own alternative discussions to consolidate our constituency, to chart a way forward for political, alternative political leadership in Kenya," she said. Wanjiru added: "We are partnering with progressive international and progressive forces that want to see a new different reality for the politics of this country. We are leaving behind ethnic baron kind of politics, party-based politics where people cannot express how they feel." She said they want to have politics that liberate Kenyans lived realities that are economic hardships which are unnecessary, man-made poverty. "We have seen that Kenya is rich in resources but we do not understand why the people of Kenya continue to languish in poverty, why our children cannot go to school and why university fees are so expensive. So we want to change this and we realise that we have the numbers to do this, we just have to consolidate our constituencies." Wanjiru said there's going to be a series of events and activities that we will again welcome the members of the media to be part of the process.
