Members of Parliament have condemned the attack against Kirinyaga County MP Njeri Maina by armed goons which resulted in her injury forcing her to be rushed to hospital in Nairobi.

Led by the Chairperson of Kenya Young Parliamentarians Association Manyatta MP Gitonga Mukunji they said that violence should not be used as a tool to settle political scores and that people should argue soberly in case of any disagreements instead of engaging in violence.

The legislators who addressed Journalists in Parliament buildings said that regardless of who is right or wrong the use of goons is unacceptable with the law enforcers required to take action and arrest those who are culpable for the attack on Njeri whom they described as a vibrant politician.

“We condemn in the strongest terms possible the violent attack against Kirinyaga County MP Njeri Maina by hired goons with the unfortunate thing being that youths have been used to attack a fellow youth who is in a position of leadership, this should not be allowed to happen again,” said Mukunji.

Nominated Senator Gloria Orwoba said that the bullying and violence against women in politics should come to an end and that nobody needs to be in a hospital bed due to local or international politics and that today it might be Njeri but tomorrow it might be another woman.

Orwoba said that political parties need to put an end to the misuse of youths in settling political differences and reprimand those who use goons since they are well known and that it was sad that some people attempted to kill Njeri who is currently being treated in a Nairobi hospital.

Kisii County MP Dorice Aburi said that it was unfortunate that some leaders would feel threatened when County MPs move around to address the concerns of their electorates bearing in mind, they were elected at the county level just like those who are getting jittery over their activities.

“Woman Representatives have been elected to serve entire counties just like Governors and Senators, we are telling them not to feel threatened whenever we move around to serve our electorate who also put them into office, violence is uncalled for and should not be tolerated against any leader,” said Aburi.

Trans Nzoia County MP Lillian Siyoi said that Njeri is one of the youngest women parliamentarians in the country and they will ensure those who injured her are brought to book notwithstanding their status in society since she did not deserve to be harmed like it happened.

Siyoi said that they will follow up on the matter until justice prevails so that no other woman leader can feel unsafe while serving the people who elected them to office.
