Renowned neurologist Prof Paul Kioy succumbs to Covid-19

Renowned neurologist and University of Nairobi (UoN) lecturer Prof Paul Kioy has succumbed to Covid-19.

Prof Kioy (pictured), a neurologist, who was a lecturer at the university’s School of Health Sciences died on Friday at a Nairobi hospital.

University Academic Staff Union Chairman Prof Richard Bosire led a delegation of 10 professors from the UoN in announcing the sad news during the burial of another lecturer Dr Joseph Aranga who died of Covid-19 in Mombasa.

Dr Aranga was a business lecturer at the School of Business at the Mombasa Campus.

He was 48 at the time of his passing.

Prof Bosire, while addressing mourners at Bombere Village in Magwagwa in Nyamira County called on the government to protect the professors, saying they are vulnerable are in the face of Covid-19.

"Most university professors are people classified in the vulnerable population and their roles are much needed unlike the rest of the country's workforce which is exempted from duty at the age of 58. That is why we are calling for the Government to provide protective gears to all lecturers," Prof Bosire said.

The funeral was also attended by North Mugirango MP Joash Nyamoko and Nyamira County Assembly Speaker Moffat Teya.

Mr Nyamoko said the loss of the don was a huge loss not only to the family but also the entire country and even the world.

"It is a pity that the Government cannot put proper modalities in protecting such important and resourceful people. Teachers should be recognised as most at risk, unlike the front line medics who know how to deal with the virus," Nyamoko said.

The late Aranga was the elder brother of Nominated Member of Nyamira County Assembly Abel Mose.
