New anti-terror strategy bears fruit

The multi-agency approach in fighting terrorism and other forms of crimes in Kenya is bearing fruit, a senior National Intelligence Service (NIS) official has said.

George Waiguru (pictured), the director of counter terrorism department at the NIS said the approach had led to a reduction of terror incidents.

Mr Waiguru spoke at the weekend during an end year party for the Special Service Unit in Nairobi.

Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai said ongoing multi-agency terror operations had a great impact in the last few years.

He noted that large-scale terror attacks had not been witnessed of late, and that the Al-Shabaab was instead focusing on sporadic operations in areas along the Kenya-Somalia border.

The National Counter Terrorism Center (NCTC) is at the centre of the implementation of the policy by enlisting and sustaining the support of different government ministries, departments and agencies in the fight against terrorism.

The Director of Criminal Investigations George Kinoti said the approach had also seen scores of suspects arrested and charged in court.
