Two held over murder of lawyer in Athi River, vehicle recovered as autopsy shows he bled to death

Two suspects were yesterday arrested as investigations into the murder of a lawyer in Lukenya area, Machakos County, continued.

Lawyer Robert Chesang was killed by two gunmen armed with AK-47 rifles who raided his house at Moke Gardens on February 17. A postmortem examination showed that he had died of profuse bleeding. He was shot seven times.

A car suspected to have been used by the gunmen was yesterday detained at Athi River Police Station and the people found in it arrested.

Police said they were interrogating the two to establish who was using the car on the day Mr Chesang was killed.

The head of the Machakos County Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), George Kisaka, said investigations were progressing well.

Preliminary findings indicate that Chesang had expressed fears for his life and had not left his house for two days.

Police are investigating if his killing had anything to do with a long-running domestic dispute that had spilled to the courts.

A guard on duty told police that the two attackers arrived at the estate at about 12.30pm and held him hostage for a while, demanding that he lead them to Chesang’s house.

When they arrived at the house, they knocked at the door, prompting Chesang to peep through the window. One of the gunmen opened fire, killing him on the spot.

The attackers fled without stealing anything from the house after tying up the guard in a corner of the compound. Police arrived after being called by Chesang’s neighbours.

Chesang practised in various law courts in the country and police are yet to establish the motive of his killing.
