Embakasi South MP caught on camera threatening man in road rage

Embakasi South Mp Irshad Sumra

NAIROBI: A man involved in a road rage encounter with Embakasi South MP Irshad Sumra has claimed he was manhandled by the legislator.

Trouble for Charles Mwangi, a truck driver, started on December 9 last year, when he allegedly failed to give way to a navy blue Land Cruiser V8 registration KCE 786X.

Unknown to Mwangi, the car was ferrying the MP and his decision led to an altercation that left him bruised, following alleged assault.

Mwangi visited The Standard Group offices with a cell phone video footage to corroborate his claims.

“I was joining Enterprise Road when the car zoomed past a Pick-up that was right behind me and the driver began hooting,” recalls Mwangi.

Mwangi says there was no contact between his truck and the navy blue car. Its driver, he says, appeared agitated as the car squeezed through and blocked his path.
“I did not stop. I maneuvered past it instead because I had work to do,” he said.
According to Mwangi, the car squeezed again through his side, but this time, the occupants rolled their windows down and began yelling at him.

“Wewe utatuona! (we will deal with you!)” he recalls being told.

Mwangi says he did not stop but proceeded to his work place, located not far from police inspection on Likoni Road.
“I realised the car had followed me to my destination and as I began to reverse in preparation to offload my cargo, I noticed the driver was of Asian origin.

Then, two young men came out of the vehicle. One had a whip and the other one was wielding a machete, both banging at my door on both sides,” he said.
Fearing for his life, Mwangi locked himself in the truck and rolled up his windows. He later came out after the spectacle attracted a crowd.

The Standard has the two video clips that Mwangi presented. They show a seemingly irate man, with a whip in his hand, roughing up Mwangi and pulling him to apologise to the MP.

Before Mwangi’s workmate began filming the incident, Mwangi claims Sumra (pictured) – without uttering a word – slapped him on his left cheek immediately he emerged from the truck.

“It is after he slapped me that someone began recording. After a while, I realised the driver was an MP,” said Mwangi.

In the video, Mwangi appears to be calling for an amicable way of solving the tiff between him and Sumra, but his pleas fall on deaf ears.

After a while, voices can be heard calling for a truce, saying in unison, “Kubali iishe (Agree so that it can end).” To which Sumra answers: “Haijaisha! Wacha Nikuambie, usiingie Reuben. Si mumemmark! (It is not ending. Let me tell you: Don’t you dare venture into kwa Reuben. Have you marked his face?)”

Mwangi, who said he now fears for his life, reported the case at Industrial Area Police Station.

Thursday, the OCPD at the station, Nehemiah Langat, confirmed that Mwangi recorded the incident under OB 17/10/12/2015.
