KCSE candidate arrested for beating nine-year-old nephew to death

A Form Four student has been arrested after he caned his nine-year-old nephew to death in a domestic brawl in Ruaraka.

The Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education candidate was at their house when he picked a quarrel with his nephew.

Police said the student picked up a water pipe and beat the boy up before he collapsed and died.

Police arrived at the scene later and arrested the student, who is set to face appropriate charges.

The body of the boy was later moved to the mortuary.

Elsewhere, a police officer was on Thursday morning shot dead by suspected thugs in Santon, Nairobi.

The officer is said to have been in the company of his colleague and had apparently gone to respond to distress calls at a crime scene when he was shot and killed at about 4am. He died on the spot as his colleague took cover while the gang ran away. His colleagues said his killing was suspicious and want it investigated.

Nairobi police boss Japheth Koome said the two officers had gone to respond to distress calls at a robbery scene when they were ambushed.

“Preliminary findings show he was shot during an ambush at the said scene of crime, but we are investigating the matter,” said Koome.

The deceased officer identified as Constable John Meme was part of a team of CID officers who have been fighting robbers in the crime prone Kasarani estate.

According to his colleagues, Meme was one of the best officers entrusted to track and fight violent criminals.

A team of officers visited the scene of the shooting on Thursday. The officer who survived the killing is helping the police with the investigations into the incident.

The shooting is the latest targeting police officers in the city. Close to a dozen officers have been killed in the city alone in the past months in various unrelated crimes.

Meanwhile, a police officer was stabbed and wounded on Tuesday during an attack by suspected thugs in Kariobangi estate.

One suspect was shot and killed as police tried to arrest a group that had been attacking and robbing from motorists and pedestrians.

Police rushed to the scene after they were called and informed that suspected thugs were harassing locals following a heavy downpour in the evening.

According to Mr Koome, the officers were confronted by one of the suspects upon reaching at the scene. The suspect had resisted being arrested and in the process; one officer was wounded, before the suspect was shot dead. He added that the other suspects escaped on foot. The officer who sustained an injury to the hand is admitted in hospital and is in stable condition.
