Nairobi, Kenya: Deputy President William Ruto's spokesman David Mugonyi was Tuesday night carjacked and robbed of cash, car and valuables in Nairobi.

Police say Mugonyi was driving to his home along Dennis Prit Road near St George's Girls at about 9.30pm when gunmen blocked and hijacked him in his Toyota Prado.

Police say the gang of four then took control of the vehicle and drove around the city with Mugonyi on board while going through his belongings before dumping him near JKIA along the North Airport Road.

They forced him to ask for money from his callers who had got wind of the attack. Mugonyi told every caller at that time to send him money through his mobile phone's Mpesa and that he had "a small problem."

Nairobi police boss Benson Kibue said they are yet to recover the car and make any arrest.

"They seem to be ordinary criminals but we are yet to find them and the car that they robbed the victim," said Kibue.

Mugonyi was slightly injured on the head as he struggled with them and was shaken when friends and police picked him from the place he was dumped at about 1am.

Several government officials had by then been mobilised to look for him.

An aide said Ruto was then informed of the incident and followed the progress.

A major hunt on the car and gang has been launched.

Elsewhere, several passengers of a matatu lost their valuables in a carjacking incident along Waiyaki Way, Nairobi. Police said the matatu was headed to Kikuyu when some of the passengers turned out to be robbers.

They then turned the vehicle to Uthiru where they robbed the passengers of their valuables and dumped them there. Police say no arrest has been made so far. Such cases are on the rise in the city with police struggling to contain them.
