NAIROBI, KENYA: Two suspected muggers were Thursday morning shot dead by police along River Road, Nairobi.

The men had attacked a technician who was walking to work at about 5 am but he raised alarm and police on patrol responded.

Nairobi County police Chief Benson Kibui said a third suspect managed to escape on foot.

“The men had also attacked several other pedestrians in the area and robbed them of their valuables,” said Kibui.

Police say they have mounted operations to stem cases of mugging in the city.

In the past weeks six suspected muggers have been killed in the Central Business District.

A special squad has been formed so far more than 50 suspects have been arrested and assorted stolen goods recovered from them.

Central OCPD Patrick Oduma said they made the arrests following intelligence the suspects were behind the incidents.

“We are determined to get rid of these criminals who are behind the attacks and robberies,” he said as he paraded some of them.

He said they regard mugging as robbery because of the nature of force the attackers use in robbing their targets.

Meanwhile, a suspected thug was Wednesday night killed by his accomplices in a disagreement over sharing of their loot in Nairobi’s Kayole area.

Police arrived there moments later and found the body. Neighbours say three men ran out of the house after the shooting.
