Kenya police in go-slow, demand pay hike

Nairobi: Kenya police on Thursday jammed communication systems and staged a go slow to demand for salary  increment.

The officers jammed communication equipment in Nairobi and those in traffic department acted slowly creating snarl ups on the road.

The officers were also sending Short Message Service (SMS) to colleagues to join in the go slow to demand pay hike.

The message stated that the officers had suffered enough and it was time to act

The text message read in part; “This Government understands no word but action. Its our time to act: put down ua tools til our salary is increased. Time 4 go slow from 1/11/12 til paid.”

This is not the first time the officers are staging a go –slow to demand pay rise.

In September, police in Nairobi and Mombasa jammed communication equipments to push for better remuneration alongside doctors and teachers.

Officers in the traffic department have been creating intentional snarl ups on the roads as part of the silent go-slow in Nairobi and insiders said those on the go-slow usually take their time to respond to incidents like traffic and crimes.

They want the government to honour a pledge it made in 2007 to increase their salaries in phases.

The pay rise has been pending since 2007 when recommendations were
made by the defunct Permanent Public Service Remuneration Review.

The pay for the least paid officer was raised from Sh18,155 to Sh34,000 per month, including allowances, if this year's installment is implemented in line with recommendations of the Justice Ransley commission on police reforms.
