Railway's Golf Club's Ngugi Njuguna came from behind to power his way into the top of the board during the third round of the 2011 KCB East Africa Classic finals at Nyali Golf Club.

His agility and consistency to return low scores paid off after he rolled four birdies for one under par 70 to lead.

Ngugi now leads the regional elite golfers with only one shot after playing one over par 214 made of 73, 71 and 70.

He begun the outward nine with a superb birdie on the par five, pared the next before dropping a sot each on hole three and four but recouped with a birdie on hole five and parred the rest of the holes.

At the inward nine, he sustained his form only dropping a shot on the par three hole eighteen and however fired birdies on the eleventh and seventeenth.

Thika’s Simon Ngige follows in hot pursuit after he returned home with level par 71 for a cumulative total of 2 over par 215 made of 70, 74, and 71.

Ngige only dropped two shots on the entire course and carded two birdies to propel his score to level par 71 in the event that saw only 27 golfers make the cut.

Disastrous bogey

Over night day two joint leaders Greg Snow and Anil Shah failed to maintain the lead after both recorded 3 over par 73 on day three dropping to the third position.

Snow hit a disastrous bogey on the par four, stroke index one hole four after he lost his ball in the bush and this cost him the much-needed strokes.

Despite Anil’s impressive start of level par 36 at the front nine, he bogeyed the tenth and double bogeyed the sixteenth at the back nine for 3 over par 38.

Day one joint leader Riz Charania came fifth with a total of 4 over par 217 to beat Uganda’s Deo Akope with a clear two points.

Brian Njoroge hit seven impressive birdies to return the best score of the day of 3 under par 69. This outstanding score propelled him to the sixth position with seven over par 220.

The battle for supremacy in the regional elite event continued yesterday playing along with with amateurs for the prize fund kitty for the winners amounting to Sh3 million. KCB Boss Martin Oduor will grace the prize giving ceremony.

disastrous bogey

Kenya Commercial Bank group announced the sponsorship deal of Sh8.7 million for the East African Golf Tour 2011 Series since last January.

The prize money for the winners includes a bonus for the best placed professionals in the KCB order of merit.

The bank has sponsored the tour for the last four seasons, first as the KCB Pro-Am Tour in Kenya and last year as a regional tour.

KCB’s Divisional director said the Bank’s objective was to championship growing in order to attract top regional and continental golfers to Kenya.
