Nandi golfers claim top slots at Dasani Gala

By James WaindiMembers of the Nandi Bears Golf Club in Kapsabet dominated the fifth qualifiers of the Dasani Golf Gala by claiming the top three slots at the Eldoret Golf Club at the weekend.It was, however, a team from Eldoret Golf Club that emerged victorious, comfortably taking the top qualification slot into the Grand Finale. More than 100 golfers from Eldoret Golf Club, Kitale Club and Nandi Bears participated in the event.On a relatively low scoring day, the Eldoret team of Ahmed Ferej, Michael Rotich, Willie Samoei and Timothy Alala finished top after registering the highest team score, a total of 110 points. Scoring averagely but consistently, the team got scores of 36, 34, 35 and 32, ensuring their continued participation in the Dasani Golf Gala. The Nandi team of William Biwott, John Tarus, J. Siati and Daniel Muge finished third with a team score of 100 points, missing qualification by five points.VICTORIOUS TEAMThe previously victorious team from Nandi, comprising of Tom Murunge, John Wanyonyi, Abraham Maichi and John Hodari finished fourth with 99 points.Nandi’s Natalie Mettto, playing off a handicap of 21, was the best individual winner not in a winning team, returning 44 points. Eldoret’s Father Rotich was the individual runner-up with 38 points and Kiran Shah third on 37. The guest winner was Abner Onsomo with 37 points.TIMASE WINSMeanwhile, Citizen Television’s Tony Timase shot a sublime 92 gross to claim his maiden victory at this year’s Zain Media Golf Challenge Series at Golf Park on Saturday.Timase embraced steady play to hole 46 gross on each nine, beating Business Daily’s Mwaura Kimani by massive 12 shots to win the seventh leg.Timase sunk straight back-to-back bogeys on the first four holes then double bogeyed par-five fifth for another bogey on shot hole sixth. He was to wrap up his first nine with double bogey, par and bogey. On second nine, Timase pared 10th and 15th, bogeyed 11th, 13th, 14th, and 18th and double bogeyed 12th and 17th.Despite the results, Idriss Situma (NTV) upheld the Series lead with 40 points, three better than Timase on 37. The Star’s Charles Kerich is third on 36, with Kipchillat Kimaru (PSS), who missed last weekend’s action, fourth on 33 points.Last year’s Series Lady winner, Betty Muindi from The People, made a dramatic comeback, sinking 111 gross to prevail in her category. Sixth leg winner Josephine Ngumba (The People) was second on 112.
