Two die, 21 injured at multiple crashes in Tharaka Nithi

Maara police boss Johnston Kabusia said a bus belonging to Joy Kenya Company that was headed to Meru town from Nairobi overturned a few metres from the bridge shortly before 10 pm Saturday.

Two people died while 21 others were injured in road accidents near Maara River Bridge on the Meru-Nairobi highway.

Maara police boss Johnston Kabusia said a bus belonging to Joy Kenya Company that was headed to Meru town from Nairobi overturned a few metres from the bridge shortly before 10pm Saturday.

The bus' driver had steered the vehicle into a bush in a bid to prevent it from plunging into the river after brakes failed.

Shortly after, a lorry headed to Nairobi from Meru, and whose brakes also failed, ran over some of those rescuing survivors of the bus accident, killing two and injuring 21.

Mr Kabusia asked drivers to avoid speeding. He said the section of the road between Chuka and Meru, which has many sharp bends and steep slopes, is slippery due to ongoing rains.

"Drivers should be very cautious at this time to avoid more accidents," he added.
