Convict defies odds, scores 352 marks

Sylvester Okoth celebrates at Kisumu Maximum Prison.

With less than five hours of study under only one qualified teacher in prison, one candidate beat the odds to score 352 marks in KCPE exams.

Sylvester Okoth, a defilement convict challenging his 20-year sentence, beat the challenging environment to pass the national examination.

Okoth attributed the remarkable performance to hard work and dedication in an environment where a single text book is shared by more than 20 people.

He hopes to successfully appeal against the sentence so as to be able to pursue his mechanical engineer ambitions, having scored A minus in Mathematics.
