Robert Ouko also had an accident in the same area days before he was killed

Kenyans are still in shock after receiving news of the tragic death of Christabel Ouko.

Christabel, 76 years, was the widow of the late Dr Robert Ouko. He was a former Foreign Affairs Minister in former President Daniel Arap Moi’s government.

She died in a freak accident on Monday 21 August after her vehicle rolled several times. Her son was driving. Andrew Naibei, the Kisumu Traffic Police chief said the accident happened along the Awasi-Kericho Highway – the same area Dr Ouko also had an accident days before he was killed in February 1990.

Christabel was returning to her home in Koru after attending the swearing-in ceremony of Kisumu Governor Prof Peter Anyang' Nyong'o when the accident happened.

Her son who was driving, lost control of the vehicle near Rai Cement Factory and the car rolled several times. He suffered minor injuries while two other passengers are reported to be in critical condition.

Robert Ouko’s unresolved murder

Dr. Ouko also died tragically and his murder has never been conclusively solved. Chief Government Pathologist Jason Ndakai Kaviti, claimed that Dr Ouko, traveled for seven kilometres, neatly arranged his personal belongings, shot himself in the head and stomach, then set his body on fire and as a final act of death, lay on his back and died.

On February 24, 1990, ten days after the Minister's grisly murder, Dr Robert Ouko was laid to rest at an emotional and politically charged ceremony at his Koru home.
