Governor Hassan Joho: I’m proud of my grade

 Mombasa Governor Ali Hassan Joho

"As I stand here I am a holder of a D- (minus) but that has not stopped me. There is progression and that should be an inspiration to other children from poor families. As I stand here I am a student of an MBA," Joho

Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho has admitted that he scored D- when he sat his KCSE exams in 1993 at Serani.

But the embattled county chief claimed that State agents had been trying to forge documents to implicate him in crime since 2013 and had now launched a probe on his birth certificate.

Speaking in Mombasa, Mr Joho said: “As I stand here I am a holder of a D minus but that has not stopped me.

There is progression and that should be an inspiration to other children from poor families. As I stand here I am a student of an MBA.”

He added: “Performing poorly at Form Four should not be considered the end to education or mean one cannot study to university and excel.”

Joho did not reveal how he managed to join Kampala University to pursue a bachelor’s degree in commerce, only saying he would do so in a statement.

In the past he had told journalists that after Serani he took courses in computer studies but it is still not clear what certificate he acquired.

“Why would I want to forge my KCSE examination results? I’m proud of the D- I scored in KCSE and achievements in life. I hope my story will inspire many students to know that not doing well in KCSE is not the end of life,”

Joho said.

He added: “I know the Jubilee government want to bar me from defending my seat but I tell Uhuru that that is a cost I’m willing to pay but I’ll continue to say the truth.”

He claimed State agents had even gone to his former nursery school at Tononoka and Tom Mboya Primary School.

“They have also gone to the Health ministry and initiated an investigation into my birth certificate,” he added.

He claimed that State agents led by Director of Criminal Investigations Ndegwa Muhoro and Kenya National Examinations Council official M Karogo had been leaking investigation on this matter to Jubilee politicians to tarnish his reputation.

At the same time, Serani Secondary School principal Abbas Juma Ulaya has released a statement indicating a candidate by the name Ali Hassan learnt at the institution and sat the Kenya Certificate of Secondary of Education KCSE examinations there in 1993.

“Serani Secondary School wishes to clarify that Ali Hassan was a bona fide student in our institution between February 1990 and November 1993,” he said in a brief statement on Monday evening.

He said Joho enrolled in the institution on February 22, 1990 under admission number 326 and sat KCSE examinations in November 1993 under index number 16032063. He did not state what this candidate scored in the examination.

Joho was reacting to a letter by Knec to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations on January 26 confirming the governor could have forged a KCSE certificate indicating he sat the Form Four examination at Serani Secondary School in 1992.

Joho traced his tribulations to a 2013 incident at the University of Nairobi where four men, including an aide of a Mombasa politician were arrested in Nairobi were arrested and charged with trying to hack into the university’s computer system and forge a results slip bearing the governor’s name in order to link him to a crime.

“In 2013, some people were arrested in Nairobi forging a document of Governor Hassan Ali Joho. It was purportedly written by a Professor Kaimenyi. The University of Nairobi responded to this, saying they did not understand how a file of its registration (information) was infiltrated,” Joho said.

And Opposition chief Raila Odinga has warned President Uhuru Kenyatta risks impeachment if his administration does not stop intimidating Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho, Opposition Chief Raila Odinga has warned.

Raila said it was against the law for Uhuru to harass people for differing with the Jubilee ideology.

“What the President is doing on the Governor of Mombasa is dictatorial and illegal. If he continues with abuse of office, we shall impeach him,” he charged.
