Kenya humble Tanzania to pick first win in Uganda

Kenya's women Handball team defeated Tanzania 41-15 at the International Handball Federation (IHF) Challenge Trophy Zone Vb tournament at Uganda Christian University Grounds in Mukono,Uganda on Saturday.

Maximillah Gekha and Sarah Mabouga scored seven goals each as joint top scorers of the match for Kenya while Arafa Omari scored six for Tanzania.

This was a great start for the Allan Mate-coached side as they seek to recapture the regional title.

Commenting after the match, Mate said his charges played according to instructions adding that it is a boost as they go in for the coming fixtures.

"It was a good match for the girls although we started on a low note with few mistakes at defense but we came in strongly in the second half to make sure we registered our first win.

"We are now planning how to approach the coming fixtures as we hope for positive results," he said.

Kenya started on a high posting a 3-0 lead in the sixth minutes after dominating the match from the first whistle.

The home girls utilized their opponents weakness of poor handling to extend the lead to 5-0 in the tenth minute with Tanzania.

At the first quarter,Kenya posted a 10-5 lead and continued the assault as they posted a resounding 17-6 lead with ten minutes to the breather.

Kenya dominated the match as they posted a 20-8 lead into the breather and on resumption,the home girls continued from where they had left with more attacks as they put the match beyond their opponents'  reach with  a 30-10 lead by the third quarter.

With ten minutes to the breather,Kenya eemed untouchable as they contiwith attacks to make sure they win big in their tournament opener.

Kenya has been pooled in Group A alongside Tanzania and Burundi while Group B has Uganda,Rwanda and South Sudan.

The women's category has attracted six teams where their matches will be played in a round Robin format.
