Girl Power Programme for Kisumu

By Feverpitch Reporter

An ambitious programme to encourage girls to take up the game of tennis will be launched in Kisumu this weekend.

The Victoria Girl Power Tennis Programme will be launched on Sunday at Kisumu Cosmopolitana Club. The programme will be run by Victoria Tennis Academy in conjunction with Amani Na Upendo Development Group.

The programme will be launched during the Amani Junior Tennis Challenge Tournament, which will curtain-raise for next month’s Safaricom Kisumu Open Tennis Championship.

Speaking after Butere Girls High School Tennis Camp, Victoria Tennis Academy’s Collins Agwanda said the programme is also aimed at promoting girl-child education through sport.

"The programme will be funded by Tennis Africa Foundation, who have partnered with Victoria and Amani Na Upendo," he said.

The Amani Junior Tennis Challenge will also be used for Victoria’s team selection ahead of the Tennis Africa Cup (East Africa Circuit) to be played in Kisumu, Nairobi, Nyali, Arusha and Kampala. Schools expected at the launch include Migosi Primary, Butere Girls, Kondele Primary, Migosi SDA, Arya Primary and Manyatta Primary School.

A total of 60 girls have signed up for the programme.
