Mombasa Governor Hassan Ali Joho and gubernatorial contender Nyali MP Hezron Awiti Bolo shared a platform for the first in many years signaling a major thaw in tension between the two rivals.

Joho visited Nyali constituency to launch a road expansion project where they met, hugged and pledged to unveil peaceful campaigns and foster peace among supporters.

They said they were opening a new era of political tolerance among rival politicians and political parties. Huge crowds gathered along Links Road and outside Mamba Village to cheer the two leaders.

As they clasped hands and greeted their supporters in Nyali yesterday Awiti described the encounter as "an historic day to remember" with Joho adding the meeting demonstrated that "the people of Mombasa are united as one."
