Church leaders optimistic DP William Ruto will be vindicated in ICC case

The Methodist Church in Kenya (MCK) has expressed confidence that Deputy President William Ruto and co-accused Joshua Sang will be cleared of charges they are facing at The Hague.

Speaking in Meru town yesterday during a ground-breaking ceremony for an office block, Presiding Bishop Joseph Ntombura said they would pray for Mr Ruto as he jets out tomorrow to The Hague for the hearing of the case due to start on Tuesday.

“I am positive Deputy President Ruto is going to be cleared (of the charges). His case is going to collapse the same way President UHuru Kenyatta’s did,” Mr Ntombura, who was flanked by MCK’s former Presiding Bishop Lawi Imathiu, and the congregation, said.

The Deputy President is expected to attend the hearing, slated to run from Tuesday until Friday.

A delegation comprising political, religious, business and other interest groups, are expected to pitch tent at The Hague for the duration of the proceedings.

Speaking separately, Meru Woman Rep Florence Kajuju expressed solidarity with the DP and said she had no doubt Ruto would be freed of crimes against humanity charges at the ICC.

Ms Kajuju said the charges facing Ruto are based on false accusations, and it is only a matter of time before he is cleared.

She said the prosecution will not sustain the case due to lack of evidence.

“We should continue praying for the Deputy President who is undergoing trial at The Hague. We are confident the case will be terminated,” said Kajuju.
