County Assembly adopts motion to open beaches to public after congestion problem

Kenyans may soon have access to all beaches at the Coast currently blocked by private developers following the passage of a motion urging for their opening.

The assembly unanimously adopted the motion that called for the opening up of the recreational beaches to de-congest the popular Jomo Kenyatta, which is patronised by thousands of people on weekends and public holidays.

Passage of the motion could lead to confrontations between the county government and the private developers, some of whom have turned adjacent beaches into private property.

Mikindani Ward Rep Duncan Onyango who moved the motion blamed traffic jams in some city roads on congestion at the Jomo Kenyatta public beach.

"Opening up the beaches will put them into good use and also ease congestion on our roads," Mr Onyango said.
