Kenya's National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) staff not yet paid for 10 months

The National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) senior staff are yet to get any salary, 10 months after they took office.

Commission's Chair Francis ole Kaparo yesterday said the commissioners and himself had not been paid, but have been working 'because of their love for the country.

"The nature of our work is risky and dangerous that someone ought to be remunerated well. But we are yet to get a salary.  However, we have continued to work because it is a duty we owe the country," said Kaparo.

"The Interior ministry said we should be paid as the other commissioners. So, letters were written to Treasury and to SRC, whose decision we are still waiting," said Kaparo.

Efforts to reach SRC's Chair Sarah Serem to establish the cause of delay were futile as The Standard was told she is out of the country.

Treasury Cabinet Secretary Henry Rotich also did not respond to a short text message sent to his mobile phone.

Kaparo, however, said the commission had requested to be allocated Sh738 million but noted that only about Sh300 million was given out.

"But we have commissioners who are very committed to their works even without pay," said Kaparo.
