Environment Cabinet Secretary Judi Wakhungu praises Japan for major boost to water sector

Kenya: Environment, Water and Natural Resources Cabinet Secretary Judi Wakhungu has recognised Japan as a top development partner in the water sector.

Prof Wakhungu said Japan had invested billions of shillings in grants towards implementing water projects across the country.

The CS listed major water supply systems in Nandi, Embu, Narok and Baringo as some of the completed projects that had been fully funded by Japan.

"Japan has progressed to become a top development partner in the water sector. It has awarded Kenya grants worth billions of shillings towards the development of numerous projects," she said.

Speaking at the launch of the Kapsabet Water Supply System in Kabutie, Nandi County, the CS reiterated the State's commitment to developing water and sanitation infrastructure, saying the Water ministry intended to provide affordable, quality water and sanitation to every household.

Calling for more support from other development partners in the water and sanitation sector, Wakhungu said availability of sufficient water would spur growth and propel the country to higher public health levels.

"My ministry invites more investors and partnerships as we would like to build, rehabilitate and expand these projects," she said.

Japanese Ambassador to Kenya Tatsushi Terada reiterated his country's commitment to alleviating the water crisis in Kenya.

"Japan intends to maintain its partnership with Kenya; not just in the water and sanitation sector but also in others," said Terada.
