We are choking in garbage: Residents appeal to Governor Sakaja

NEWS

Dagoretti North constituency in Nairobi is currently facing a severe crisis that poses significant risks to public health and safety following illegal dumpsites on the estate roads.Residents complained that the area has become a site for illegal dumping as untouchable garbage cartels have transformed two major roads into dumping sites, creating an environmental nightmare for residents.

The residents said that rampant illegal dumping of solid waste in the Riruta area of Kawangware has set the stage for a potential public health disaster. They said that the accumulation of garbage not only emits repugnant odours but also provides a breeding ground for disease-carrying flies, putting thousands of residents at risk of disease outbreaks.

The dumping sites have become safe havens for these gangs, leading to an alarming surge in mugging cases and a prevailing sense of insecurity among the community. They use the dumping sites as safe havens," explained Jane Wangechi, a concerned resident, adding, "The dire situation has been further exacerbated by the infiltration of criminal gangs into the area."

The illegal dumping sites, situated in this densely populated residential area, have turned into breeding grounds for disease, posing a grave threat to the well-being of residents, particularly vulnerable populations. The waste overflow has now encroached upon private lands and residential properties, exacerbating the crisis and making daily life increasingly challenging for the community.

Residents voiced their frustrations to The Nairobian, criticizing the authorities for their lack of action in addressing this critical issue. They claim that both the police and officials from the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) have neglected their responsibilities, leaving the community feeling abandoned and unheard.

"It is hard to believe that those in power are supposed to help us, but they are the ones who are supposed to help us. We have had this problem for years," Waithera, who preferred we use one name, said.

She added that the consequences of this crisis extend far beyond immediate health hazards, with criminal gangs taking advantage of the chaotic environment to terrorize locals. In the face of mounting turmoil, the resilient residents are demanding swift intervention, directing their plea for assistance to Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja, urging him to prioritize the health, safety, and overall well-being of the community he serves.

"Our battle is one for dignity, security, and a better future," expressed an anonymous resident.Highlighting the urgent need for action, another resident emphasized the importance of accountability, saying that the people of Dagoretti North constituency deserve a clean and safe environment free from health risks and with access to clean air and water. The authorities must acknowledge the urgency of the situation and address it promptly. Failure to do so will perpetuate the suffering of the community and put more lives at risk.

The resounding plea of the residents echoes throughout the constituency, calling for an end to illegal dumping, immediate measures to mitigate public health risks, and the restoration of security. The fate of Dagoretti North hangs in the balance as the community anxiously awaits a swift and decisive response from the authorities. Will those in power rise to the occasion, acknowledging the hardships faced by the residents and taking the necessary actions to alleviate their suffering? The answer will determine the future well-being of this community.
