Motorists protest traffic cops hitching free rides

NEWS

A section of traffic police and traffic marshalls in Nairobi have been blamed for contributing to the traffic jam menace in the city during peak hours.

Many dwellers expressed disgust that instead of the officers controlling traffic flow, especially in the morning, they have resorted to competing to board the public service vehicles under the guise of directing them to stages.

"The truth of the matter is that these officers are only competing in getting incentives from the matatus and not controlling the traffic. They should direct them where to go but not get inside," said Robinson Ambayo.

The officers are also being blamed for allowing the matatus to drop passengers at undesignated areas, a situation that normally leads to jams.

Some of the notorious spots where the officers have frequently been spotted entering matatus to collect the bribes include St Peters Clavers, Ronald Ngala Post Office, along Tom Mboya Street, Ambassadeur, Kencom, stages around Koja Mosque, Railway Station, and the intersect between Kenyatta Avenue and Muindi Mbingu Street.
