Police recover suspected heroin, bhang in three counties

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has recovered suspected cannabis sativa and heroin in Nairobi, Kitui and Taita Taveta counties.

In a statement DCI said that its Anti-Narcotics Unit (ANU) detectives from the coastal region recovered a packet of heroin and two sacks brimming with suspected cannabis sativa in Mwatate.

They arrested one man identified as Charles Mwakala Mngolia, 42, in Jombo Chawia village at Hill Court Apartments, who was placed in custody.

ANU officers say the suspect is allegedly the mastermind of the illicit trade.

In Nairobi county, officers from DCI headquarters acting on intelligence in a Lang’ata area raid recovered a large consignment of suspected cannabis sativa.

“The operation was carried out in Lang’ata, where detectives stormed a residential house believed to have been used as a storage and distribution point for narcotics,” DCI said.

They found one suspect who they say appeared cooperative before attempting to escape using a window in the room by feigning that he was searching for keys.

The officers were finally let in by a woman who opened the gate where they conducted a search and recovered seven sacks stuffed with suspected Cannabis Sativa allegedly hidden inside servant quarters within the compound.

The officers also recovered two weighing scales and a roll of yellow tape which they believe was to be used to pack the narcotics inside the house.

“From the main house, detectives recovered two carton boxes brimming with Rizla rolling papers, a mobile phone, and a cache of assorted documents, all pointing to a sophisticated operation.”

Police said they were looking for a suspect they believe manage to escape before the raid.

The DCI officers transported the suspected heroin and cannabis exhibits for safe custody and testing at the government chemist.

In Kitui County, detectives are searching for two men who abandoned their consignment and motorcycle before fleeing on foot after they were stopped in Kwa Vonza.

A police report shows that the two men who were under surveillance by police are suspected to be traffickers in the county.

They were riding the motorcycle from Kitui towards Machakos when they encountered a roadblock, where the officers manning it signalled them to stop but they instead sped off, triggering a chase.

When they noted that officers were closing down on them, they allegedly abandoned the motorcycle and fled into nearby bushes.

They recovered motorcycle and suspected narcotics were taken to the Kitui Police Station for safe custody as investigations and search for the suspects continues.
