Chase your dreams

Nairobi; Kenya: We all have dreams; to be successful, to set new records, to ‘make it’.... Many times though, it is easy to dream but hard to achieve what we dream of.

Lupita Nyong’o’s quote, “All dreams are valid”, is often repeated nowadays. Less cited is the anonymous advice: “Happy are those who dream dreams and are willing to pay the price to make them come true.”

What is that price? Sometimes it is simply sparing the time and effort to get what we need. As you will see in the Folktale, Cricket missed a pair of wings simply because he could not be bothered to walk to the palace and pick what was freely offered by the king.

In today’s world, such opportunities are rare. Often, accomplishing our dreams requires us to take steps of faith.

Take the case of John Kiptarus. He is only 20, but is guardian to his siblings and his late sister’s children. His family is poor and could not raise the secondary school fees, leave alone take him to university. But John’s dream was to go to university, so he did just that, armed only with his dream and the confidence that he would find someone else to believe in that dream. In the process, he inspired an initiative to help needy students.

Achieving our dreams also takes hard work. As this week’s Top Gun, Imtiaz Raffiq, narrates, even when you are talented, you need to practise, practise and practise some more.

Whatever your dreams are, I hope this week’s magazine will inspire you to chase and catch them.
