Ulinzi Stars return to winning ways in thrilling league match

Marksman John Makwata scored a hat-trick as Ulinzi Stars rediscovered their winning formula to dismiss stubborn Ushuru 3-2 in an entertaining Kenyan Premier League match at Afraha Stadium in Nakuru.

As Makwata shone for the soldiers, defender Cylus Shitote was given marching orders for intentionally handling the ball in the box after being overwhelmed by Ushuru striker Roosevelt Blaty and striker Mohammed Diallo in their efforts to score. The referee awarded a penalty, which Maurice Odipo successfully converted for Ushuru’s second goal in the 44th minute.

It was a torrid outing for Shitote, having also conceded another penalty when he fouled Kennedy Oduor in the box to earn Ushuru their first goal from the spot in the 24th minute.

Makwata did level for the soldiers from the spot in the 27th minute after defender Kelal Ogal also handled in the box.

Makwata was on the mark again in the 40th minute after goalkeeper Shaban Odhonji fumbled with the ball and the speedy striker reacted quickly to snatch the ball from the ensuing goalmouth melee and notch his second goal for the soldiers.

Makwata capped his impressive outing in the 55th minute by scoring Ulinzi’s winning goal from a solo move from the left flank before unleashing a fierce shot that left Odhoji bewildered.
