FKF to use Copa tourney to select U-17 team

Football Kenya Federation will use Copa Coca-Cola U-16 football tournament to select part of the national team.

The side will participate in the Africa Cup of Nations U-17 qualifiers that begin in June. According to FKF National Executive Committee member Chris Amimo, the tournament will give the federation an opportunity to select young players, who will form part of the national team to face Mali as Kenya starts its journey to 2017 Gambia U-17 championships.

Seven players and two officials of current Harambee Stars squad in Guinea Bissau are a product of the tournament. Coca-Cola has partnered with the Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association to help in the running of the tournament.

The Ministry of Education has organised the tournament to run alongside Term 2A Schools Games that include handball, rugby, netball and athletics.

KSSSA Secretary General David Ngugi said the tournament will only be open students in Form One and Two, but who are not older than 16 years.

“This will be a good opportunity for schools to maximise on talents of players within the set age bracket. The tournament will form part of our Term 2A games,” said Ngugi.
