Posta triumphs to remain on road to Anfield

Poasta rangers win Road to Anfield tourney

The Postal Corporation of Kenya (PCK) will represent the country in next month’s East Africa regional finals of the Standard Chartered Bank Road to Anfield football tournament after winning the third edition of the competition at the Kenya School of Monetary Studies (KSMS), yesterday.

The Postmen, who had former Kenyan Premier League players in their ranks, stunned Capital 3-2 in a closely contested final match that gave fans much to cheer.

The two-day tournament brought-together 40 teams from the media and clients with defending champions the Standard Media Group falling 4-3 to Radio Africa on penalty shots in the round of 16. PCK’s goals were netted by Steve Okere, Samuel Ouma and James Okal with Solomon Okeyo scoring a brace for the Capital.

Okeyo won the golden boot for finishing as the tournament’s top-scorer with 11 goals, while his teammate Richard Litunya shared the MVP award with PCK’s Sammy Ouma.

Radio Africa bounced back from their 2-0 defeat to PCK in the semi-finals to beat Vivo Energy 1-0 in the third-place play-offs.

And for lifting the third edition of the 5-a-side football tournament, the Postmen, will now battle with winners from Uganda and Tanzania on March 7 for a ticket to Anfield, the home ground of English Premier League side Liverpool.

Speaking during the trophy presentation ceremony, the Standard Chartered CEO Lamin Manjang thanked all the participating teams for making the tournament a success.

“I thank all teams for their participation. It’s a befitting final and I congratulate the winners, but continue training hard and prepare well for the regional finals,” said Manjang.
