Harambee Stars captain Wanyama made a winning start to his four year stay at English Premier League side Southampton when they beat UE Llagostera, a Spanish Division three side 2-1 in their first pre-season friendly on Wednesday in Spain.

Wanyama made his debut in the second half, coming on for Jack Cork in the 46th minute and had a good show which included a 78th minute shot that evaded the goalmouth by inches.

The Saints won 2-1, Jay Rodriguez scoring a brace. Saints opened the scores in the 28th minute of the match, before the hosts leveled in the 61st minute through David Cano. However, Rodriguez restored the lead for the visitors just six minutes later.

Southampton’s next assignment is on Saturday against Palamos CF before they face off with German side Schalke O4.

Wanyama joined the Saints last week after completing a record 12.5 million pounds from Scottish champions Celtic.

Meanwhile, former Wanyama side Celtic coasted to a convincing 3-0 victory over Cliftonville in Belfast to put them in charge of the Uefa Champions League second round qualifying tie.

Mikael Lustig headed the Hoops into the lead at Solitude and Georgios Samaras´ rasping drive put them in charge at the break, after they had completely controlled the first half.

The Scottish double winners struck the woodwork several times before James Forrest completed the scoring in the closing stages of the second half, leaving Neil Lennon´s men in an excellent position to progress to the next round ahead of the second leg in Glasgow.
