Imonje: Gor will not have easy ride on Sunday

By Gilbert Wandera

Muhoroni Youth coach Alfred Imonje says playing their home fixture against Gor Mahia in Nairobi on Sunday does not give their opponents undue advantage.

The relegation-threatened side has moved their weekend match against the league leaders to the Nyayo National Stadium as their home ground cannot accommodate the expected huge turnout of Gor fans.

Asked whether this does not give Gor advantage Imonje said: “There is no advantage at all because we will be 11 against 11 on the pitch.”

He dismissed Gor fans as mere noisemakers who will not deter his side from giving their best on the pitch.

“We are not worried about the expected huge turn-out at Nyayo. The fans will be on the terraces making noise and the players on the pitch playing. We don’t expect it to affect us,” he said.

Imonje said his side is up to the task and if anyone doubted it, they should ask the champions Tusker.

“We are capable of stopping Gor Mahia or any other major opposition. There is absolutely no doubt about our ability.

Two weeks ago, we pushed Tusker at their home ground before they narrowly won,” he said.

Imonje said his side is in a must-win situation and are prepared to do anything to get all three points at Nyayo Stadium to ensure they remain in top flight football next season.

“Our situation is comparable to someone close to dying and must do everything to live. We must win at least one of our two remaining matches to ensure we survive and are beginning with the fixture on Sunday,” he added.

Muhoroni are one of the four teams in danger of relegation with two matches before the season ends.

The others are Nairobi City Stars, Rangers and Oserian. This weekend’s matches may determine who gets relegated.

While Muhoroni will be hosting Gor in Nairobi, Rangers take on City Stars at City Stadium on Saturday while Oserian travel to Sony.

Two of the teams facing relegation Muhoroni and Oserian were promoted to the top league last season.

Elsewhere, Bandari need just one point to qualify for next season’s KPL.
