Why you need to preserve good character (Photo: iStock)

There are four key areas of your life that God wants to bless; your finances, health, legacy and work. In the case of work, the question to ask is how we are supposed to act and react in our work place.

The bible says that a man who excels in his work will stand before kings or important people. When you commit to be skilled in your work, God will prosper you. The economy does not control your success in career, your faith in God does.

If you have faith and trust in him and do you work diligently; he will preserve you despite what is going on around you. Some people are so successful in their work while others are not because of their approach.

It is why and how you do it and what you become while doing it that matters. There are different careers and God says it is your choice to do what you love and is passionate about. He is more interested in what you become because it is your character that you will take to heaven and not career. This is why, what you do, how you do it, when you do it and what you become are more important than your work.

God can bless any kind of work. It is the motive, method and meaning that matter, not the money you are paid for the work you do. Commit your works to the Lord, and your thoughts will be established. When you commit your work to God, he gets involved in the decisions you make. Thomas Jefferson said, “I find that the harder I work the more luck I seem to have.”

We should work because we represent God and His Kingdom at our work place. We are called to be excellent workers which bring benefits such as promotion. God directs blessings of riches to us through hard work. We are working for the glory of God and not for man.

How do we succeed at our work place?

Start working enthusiastically for God to bless your career and to succeed. The word enthusiasm comes from the Greek words ‘en’ and ‘theos’. ‘En’ is the word for ‘in’ and ‘theos’ is the word for God. To be enthusiastic means to be in God and therefore, has nothing to do with the job.

Whatever you find to do, whether it is cleaning toilets or the floor, do it with all might. This is a command not a suggestion!

Understand who you are really working for. The truth is, it is neither your boss nor the board of directors but the Lord. It is easy to be enthusiastic when you know you are not doing it for this man or woman but for the Lord. When you do it as unto the Lord; you can do anything - wash dishes or pick up litter or dig trenches or repair cars.

Concentrate on building character. Your character is more important than your career. What you become as a result of your work is very important because you will not take your job or wealth to heaven. Glory in tribulations knowing that tribulations produce perseverance; and perseverance character; and character hope. Care for and love those you work with. When you care about the people you work with, you will attract God’s favour in your work. Care even for those who make it hard for you to work or do not love God. For God to teach you real love he will put you around unlovable people and you have to learn to love them.

Exceed what is expected of you. Whatever you do, do more than the minimum. Most people today just do the average to get by and therefore do not stand out or succeed. Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men (Colossians 3:23).

Expand your skills with continuous learning. To succeed, you need to know that learning does not end when you graduate; you learn throughout your life. All leaders are readers and the moment you stop reading, you stop leading. The growth of your firm or career requires you to grow through improvement of your skills by learning. If the axe is dull, and one does not sharpen the edge, then he must use more strength; but wisdom brings success.
