Sandra Chege, 27, works as the head of communications for the Blankets & Wine event, she talks to FLORENCE ONYANGO about her work.

How long have you worked as the head of communications for Blanktes & Wine?

The role has taken shape as the event has grown, but I’ve been working on Blankets & Wine for about two years.

What does your work entail?

I execute the brand marketing and communication strategy. I work on various aspects of branding and message development in order to ensure consistent messaging and quality control.

What are some of the other jobs you have done?

My interests have been numerous and varied over the years. I have been a lighting director, costume coordinator on two different locally produced musicals; I have been a Theatre for Development facilitator, a project assistant in an NGO, Music Label manager, an artist manager, and more recently an assistant producer on a Buddhist ceremony.

Who is your role model and why?

My parents. They have demonstrated the importance of integrity and passion in their work. They have worn many hats over their illustrious careers and inspire me to stick with my love for the creative industry.

Where did you study in college?

I did my undergraduate degree in Psychology at USIU Nairobi and my Master’s degree in Theatre & Media for Development at the University of Winchester, UK.

Is this what you have always wanted to do?

I have always wanted to create and collaborate in the creation of culture and memorable experiences. So yes, this is what I have always wanted to do.

What is the best part of your job?

I have had room to grow my skill base and test the breadth my capabilities.

What is the worst part of your job?

Working to justify the value of the creative industry.

What is the best advice you have ever been given when it comes to your career?

Do what you love.

What do you do to relax after a stressful day?

I watch shows; right now I’m really into Revenge, The Good Wife, Suburgatory and a few others
