Kenyan celebrities accused of clout chasing in 2021

News
 Gospel singer Ringtone.

We have seen celebrities do questionable things in the name of getting undeserved fame. This is mainly common with musicians when trying to promote new songs and albums. In Kenya, we have celebrities who have been branded serious clout chasers due to the extreme lengths they go to dupe their fans.

Several Kenyans on social media have constantly called out their favourite celebrities for pulling absurd stunts for clout, some of who even go ahead and unsubscribe from their channels. However, despite their actions irritating most people, some of these celebrities are unwilling to stop as they believe it is the only way to make it in the competitive entertainment industry.

Today, we take a look at some of the celebrities who have been accused of clout chasing in 2021.

Bahati

In 2020, singer Bahati irritated many of his fans after lying about breaking up with Diana Marua, only to release a song a week after the stunt. Despite critics, Bahati, who switched from gospel to secular music, recently admitted to deliberately pulling stunts to promote his 10-song album Love like This.

"I have been doing it on purpose. The way the industry is set up, I would not afford not to create talkability around my name, ‘’ said Bahati.

Willy Paul

From his drama with socialite Shakilla last year to calling out fellow artistes on his social media handles, Willy Pozee has irked many Kenyans with his stunts to remain relevant. In July this year, the Kamata singer took to his Instagram and lashed out at fellow singer Size 8 for blocking him on the platform and refusing to pick his calls.

“Size 8, you blocked me on Instagram just like that. four years now. Is that what God’s people do? Surely ni gospel gani hii? Ata simu zangu hushiki. Thought tulikuwa brother and sister. Anyway thanks a lot woman of God. Remember no one is perfect,” wrote Willy Paul, something which got the attention of many Kenyans as the two are friends and have done several collabos in the past.

Size 8’s husband, DJ Mo, even exchanged a few insults with Willy Paul on social media to make the drama look real. However, as it turns out, they were out to promote their new song on YouTube called Lenga.

Ringtone

The singer, who claims to be the wealthiest gospel artiste in East Africa is not new to controversies. In May this year, Ringtone claimed he would expose singer Guardian Angel for hypocrisy just days after he proposed to his girlfriend, Esther Musila. But as Kenyans guessed right, something was cooking behind the scenes and thus, did not delve much into Ringtone’s stunts. The duo later released a song dubbed Fagia, and it looks like the clout worked as the song garnered thousands of views days after it was uploaded on YouTube.

Nadia Mukami

The African popstar is arguably one of the youngest and most successful performing artistes in Kenya. In 2020, Nadia emerged as Boomplay’s most-streamed female Kenyan artiste, according to the company’s music fact report. However, despite her fame, in May this year, the songbird had many of her fans believe she had found love and was ready to settle down with a man named Priyan.

“Being in the limelight, you need someone who loves you for you. Someone who sees you outside the fame, money, attention, gossip, ridicule and insults. Someone who speaks to your soul and you are just that!” Nadia captioned a photo while holding hands with Priyan on her Instagram.

She added: “I should have met you earlier to experience this kind of love but I know it is not late. We are from two different ethnicities but our Love overcomes that! I love you so much Priyan. The next celebrity couple.”

But a day later, fans were disappointed when they learnt that Nadia pulled the stunt to promote her new song Nipe Yote.
