Burna Boy declares himself Africa’s top artist after second Grammy nomination

News
Burna Boy's rant comes just weeks after Burna Boy earned his second Grammy nomination for his Twice as Tall album.

Nigerian superstar Burna Boy has declared himself as the leading African artist. The African Giant creator sent a stern warning to competitors saying that power has changed hands and that they should accept it and move on.  This rant comes just weeks after Burna Boy earned his second Grammy nomination for his Twice as Tall album under Best Global Music Album, a nomination he also got last year for his album African Giant.

Twice as Tall, his fifth studio album which has undoubtedly been the biggest African album this year was released on August 14 to critical success. It broke a couple of streaming records, recording five million streams an hour after release. The album also debuted at Number 1 on the Billboard World Music Chart, becoming the highest and only Nigerian at the spot in the chart.  Like his Grammy-nominated African Giant, Twice As Tall also makes references to colonialism, racism and how the African society can survive without being taken advantage of.

Beef with Davido?

Many people think Burna’s message was directed at fellow Nigerian artist Davido seeing that the two have been rumoured not to see eye to eye. Davido also released his highly acclaimed sophomore album A Better Time this year featuring the likes of Nicki Minaj, Sauti Sol, Nas and Sho Madjozi. Burna and Davido traded words in the lyrics in their songs No Vit Flex and FEM respectively. Both songs are in their 2020 albums. Some have however brushed off the rumours after Davido, through a Twitter post, congratulated Burna for his first Grammy nomination with the African Giant album. But Davido hasn’t replicated the gesture for Burna’s recent Grammy nomination.
