Police in Eldoret have launched investigations into an incident where a retired athlete was tortured for three hours by robbers in police uniform. The six thugs gained entry into the former marathoner Elijah Mutai’s Eldoret home at 10pm on Monday after deceiving guards that they were police officers pursuing a fugitive hiding in the compound.

What followed was a three-hour ordeal for the athlete and his family. The home is in the leafy Elgon View suburb believed to be among the most secure. The robbers made away with electronics and utensils using Mutai’s Toyota Hiace.
“They accused me of being a thug and demanded money. Two of them had guns. I pleaded for my life and asked them to take all they wished instead,” he said.

Yesterday, Uasin Gishu police said they were still pursuing the suspects. The former athlete is currently a coach in Kaptagat, Elgeyo Marakwet County. Mutai has a 2:09:27 personal best record from Chungchon marathon held in Korea.
