One of the students died at Homa Bay County Teaching and Referral Hospital where she had been admitted.

Three Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) candidates have died in the county in the last one week.

Faith Atieno Ouko of Kakimba Mixed Secondary in Suba North died after developing complications during delivery at the county referral hospital yesterday.

County police boss Marius Tum said the candidate was taken to the hospital on Sunday.

And on the same Sunday, another candidate died after sustaining serious injuries during a football match.

The candidate, identified as Javan Onyango of DC Mixed Secondary School in Rangwe, was injured in the abdomen on Friday evening.

Gem West chief Joel Otieno said the 17-year-old boy was kicked accidentally by one of his colleagues.

“Information I have is the boy sustained serious injuries on the lower abdomen. It is suspected that someone accidentally kicked him and interfered with his kidney,” said Otieno.

The boy was rushed to a private health facility in Rodi Kopany Township after collapsing. His condition later worsened and was referred to the county referral hospital where he die.

Early last week, another candidate at Atemo Mixed Secondary School in Rachuonyo East collapsed during a football match and died.

Toddy Otieno was pronounced dead on arrival at Matata Nursing Home in Oyugis Town.

Otieno and his colleagues had decided to play football after exams when he collapsed.
