Nairobi: Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has summoned Kisii and Laikipia University Councils Wednesday next week to answer questions on compliance with university regulations and standards.

The meeting comes after Commission for University Education (CUE) released an audit report recommending closure of 10 Kisii university campuses and one for Laikipia.

CUE officials shall also be present in the meeting.

The audit report indicates that the Kisii University campuses Eldoret, Eldama Ravine, Nyamira, Kabarnet, Migori, Ogembo, Keroka, Kehancha, Kapenguria, Isebania and Nyahururu fell below the expected threshold and have been identified for closure.

Kisii University last week protested the proposed closure of its campuses, saying that all campuses are established in line with the recommendations of the University Senate and in accordance with the University's Act 2012.

The universities were given 90 days to shut down the campuses, but Kisii University's deputy Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, Maurice Amutabi said they had not received any communication from CUE on the closure.
