Seven students arrested for attempting to torch Laikipia University's library

Laikipia, Kenya: Seven students from Laikipia University’s main campus in Nyahururu town were on Sunday night arrested after they attempted to burn the institution's library.

This followed the sailing through of a referendum to change the students’ constitution. The suspects were arrested by nigh guards.

According to the vice chancellor Francis Lelo, a jerrican full of petrol was recovered.

He added that they had already set the library on fire before the guards noticed.

"We suspect that the students wanted to torch the library because the referendum question to change the constitution sailed through. The guards noticed that a section of the library was on fire and bumped on the students in action at the scene," he said.

Lelo said that one of the financiers of the incident was among those arrested adding that the culprit had posted some messages on his face book account.

He said said the students were taken to Nyahururu Police Station and would be arraigned in court to face arson charges.
