Education Ministry revising curriculum

The Ministry of Education is revising the school curriculum to align it with competency development and also incorporate Information and Communication Technology (ICT).

Education Cabinet Secretary Jacob Kaimenyi yesterday urged education stakeholders to strengthen collaboration in the implementation of the free education programme.

"I urge you to recommend ways of creating a culture of innovation and partnerships, with a view to meeting the socio-economic needs of our dynamic regional and international education markets," said Prof Kaimenyi.

Addressing the education policy makers in Nairobi yesterday, Kaimenyi said the ministry plans to realign Kenya's education system to provide children with the skills required to meet an evolving globalised society.

In a speech read on his behalf by Senior Deputy Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Isaac Nyaribo, Kaimenyi said developing financing models for Technical, Industrial and Vocational Education and Training (Tivet), and university education, was a priority for the ministry.

The Ministry of Education in conjunction with the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development is in the process of undertaking comprehensive curriculum reforms.

Education experts are clear that a change in both the curriculum and the assessment method is required to improve skills acquisition in education.

"This must start with 'a complete rethink of what skills are necessary to prepare learners for the world they are inheriting and ensure that there are strategies to teach them across all ages', said Director of Innovation, Equity Group Foundation, Julia Moffett.

Rusinga Group of Schools Director Wairimu Njage said teamwork, problem solving, critical and independent thinking were all necessary in the world of work, but rarely taught in schools.

"There is need for practical, hands-on, project-based creativity and innovation that encourages transference of knowledge into problem-solving solutions that address the challenges facing communities," said Ms Njage.
